What is meningococcal disease?

Meningococcal disease is a serious illness caused by several strains of meningococcal bacteria. MenB and MenACWY. Younger people living in close contact with others are at greatest risk.

If you are not vaccinated, you could end up with infections that may within hours become life-threatening

• Infections of lining of brain and spinal cord (meningitis)

• Serious blood infection (septicaemia)

What are the benefits of getting the meningococcal vaccine?

• Protect you from getting the bacteria that causes meningococcal disease, which could develop into life-threatening infections.

• Protect yourself and your loved ones by stopping the spread of disease to others in your community.

The meningococcal vaccines (both MenB and MenACWY) are FREE for:
Anyone between the ages of 13 to 25 year olds entering within the next three months, or currently in their first year of:

• Living in boarding school hostels or tertiary education halls of residence

• Military barracks

• Youth justice residences

• Prisons
